Why did you become a DJ?
I was introduced to a Super Mario x M.I.A. mashup by a friend and was instantly hooked. I was really into Hip Hop culture at the time and got into scratching and making my own mashups, but my first gig came through a friend of a friend who desperately needed a DJ since theirs cancelled 2 hours before the event – I barely knew how to mix at the time since all I really did was scratch but I started taking mixing a lot more seriously after that and I’ve developed my own style with it.
What / Who are your musical influences?
Since I got into DJing and mixing when I first heard some really crazy mashups – DJ Sleeper is the guy I ever heard that mixed lots of different genres and songs together rapid-fire style (all impressively on vinyl too!) and ever since then I’ve been a fan of that style of mixing – I try to keep the music changing so that the listener is never bored and it keeps them engaged by constantly surprising them with new tracks and mashups they wouldn’t expect while keeping the musical integrity and the energy behind the track intact.
I’ve also got a lot of other DJs and producers that inspire me, but really it boils down to anyone who puts their heart into their craft, it really shows and when others can reach me in some way through their art, it motivates me to try to share and impact other with mine.
If you had to put one thing on your artist rider, what would it be?
Honestly, I’m not really demanding but as long as I could get at least 3 CDJs and a few bottles of water – that’s all I need 🙂
What is the largest crowd you’ve played in front of?
Headlining at my favorite spot in DC (originally from there) I played all night to a sold out club for 300 people.
I started live streaming DJ sets last year @ www.twitch.tv/JOVIAN (every night 6pm-midnight PT) it’s a really cool non-conventional way for me to share my music with people all over the world without any restrictions and the most people I’ve played to in a night is about 10,000 – but I would absolutely love the chance to play to that many people live and get to see their reactions and raw emotions.
Besides DJ’ing, what other hobbies do you have?
Since I produce music and DJ and run a live stream of both everyday, I don’t really have too much time for a lot of the things I used to do but a lot of the people I know through streaming are big into gaming so during my downtime I’ll usually just chill and play some games with friends – or I like to unplug and just go out and do something random or explore new areas just to get out of my comfort zone, I find that it really helps boost my creativity and helps me think about things in a new and different way.
